Bajan surfer, Chelsea Tuach making waves in California
Barbados’ Surfer of the Year in both the Open Women’s and Under 18 Girls’ Divisions, Chelsea Tuach has continued to make a name for herself and her country on the West Coast of the United States. This past week-end Chelsea competed in the 20 and Under Girls’ Division of a Volcom Surf Contest which took place in Mandalay, Oxnard, California. Chelsea surfed strong in difficult, shifty conditions and took second place to Malibu’s Frankie Harrer. Third was Tia Blanco from San Clemente and fourth was Steffi Kerson from Ventura.
Last weekend she competed in the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) Gold Coast Explorer event where she was also second with wave scores in the good to excellent range. Winner of this event was Tia Blanco.
Chelsea has also been competing in the South West Open Conference of the NSSA where she is currently ranked 3rd. The South West Conference has the largest membership and is regarded by the surfing industry as the highest level of surfing competition on the West Coast of the United States. After an event held at Seaside Reef on September 30, the Organizers wrote this about Chelsea: “Barbados’ rising female star, Chelsea Tuach, showed the exceptional depth of her skills by posting the event’s only perfect 10 score!”
The week-end before, at a Gold Coast Explorer event held in Ventura, the NSSA organizers wrote in the post event coverage: “A noteworthy performance was put in by one of Barbados’ top female surfer , Chelsea Tuach, who has already shown signs of greatness in contests this season, and who had the highest heat total of the day – 17.2 (out of a possible 20).”
Chelsea, who is sponsored by ROXY, Red Bull, Dragon Alliance and Dakine heads to Oceanside this weekend to compete in another NSSA South West Open event under the watchful eye of world class coach, Mike Lamm.
