Bajan surfer Dane Mackie wins the Makka Pro Junior title in Jamaica
Bajan Dane Mackie cements his place as one of the Caribbean’s top junior surfers at the Western Atlantic Surf Series, Makka Pro, held in Jamaica on the 21st and 22nd July, 2012. Not only did Dane win the Junior Pro title but he also competed in the Open Men’s Pro and placed a commendable 5th overall.
The LOST Enterprises, DIGICEL, JADA and Arnette, sponsored grom dominated every heat he surfed in both divisions of the Open Men and Junior Pro up to the semi- final of the Open Men where he was narrowly edged out to 3rd place. When interviewed at the presentation, Dane commented that he stuck to his game plan and it worked well for him.
The left point break at Yallah’s produced conditions in the 4 foot range on Saturday and 2-3 foot range on Sunday, which Dane owned with his big and powerful off the lip hacks, radical carves, controlled floaters and progressive air reverse 360’s and blow tail reverses, which earned him the highest scoring combinations of the contest. In the Junior Pro final, Dane’s total score was 16.44 ahead of Nathan Behl of the USA with a 15.40 in 2nd place, Elishame Beckford from Jamaica 3rd with 14.33 and 4th Jordan Heaselgrave of Barbados. Dane’s score was the highest in all the finals at the event!!
As the 2012 Barbados Surfing Association’s, Surfer of the Year, Dane has consistently found himself at the top of the podium in almost every contest he entered. With his surfing talent combined with his focus, endurance and commitment to the sport, he should easily be able to make the transition to the world pro circuit.
