Last year we featured BMX team More Halal when they won best video in the Caribbean Freestyle Association’s BMX Street Online Video Competition. So Adrenaline Sun had to track down team leader,Romell Bourne for an exclusive interview. Trust us, Romell has no brakes on his BMX so it wasn’t easy getting him to stop for an interview. We finally caught Romell and the members of More Halal on Bay Street (St. Michael, Barbados) for a quick chat about the BMX scene in Barbados. How old were you when you first started to do BMX stunts? I started doing BMX tricks around 13 after playing the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX on the Playstation 2. My first actual bike was a Raleigh Max that my step dad got me for Christmas. What was the first trick you ever landed? My first trick I landed was a bunny hop and I still do that trick every day. What is the BMX scene like in Barbados? The BMX scene in Barbados is constantly growing and I am amazed how people connect from different walks of life to have a good time. As for the number of riders I have met so many different people, I have lost count. So many new faces all with their own style and influence. I remember building a jump at my grandma’s in St. Andrew thinking my friends and I would be riding it secretly only to come back to find five random kids having a go at it. Name the 3 sickest tricks in your arsenal? Flip whip, flip turn-down and front flip even though I suck at them. Hahahaha What type of BMX do you ride? Any modifications? I ride the Envy 2 frame from a small company called The Take. I do a bit of modifications to my bike. I run a titanium spindle in my 3pc cranks, adjusted my free coaster slack with some random hardware spacers. I built up my bike myself, all custom from the ground up. If it was possible that you could teach our Father of Independence, Errol Barrow a stunt, which stunt would you teach him and why? I would teach him how to do a handrail so all the people who think I’m breaking their rails can see that even the Father of Independence knows they have multiple uses. I have to ask, More Halal is a rather unusual name for a BMX team, why did you choose it for your crew? Well, Halal is really the Muslim term for how they prepare food. Where we used to stunt, there was a Muslim food van which came around that had a picture of chicken wearing shades on it and we thought it looked cool so that’s where the name came from. Where are your favorite spots to ride? I like that sounds and the sights of the city of Bridgetown (Barbados) and when I’m not there, I’m surely riding the city of London. Do you have any advice for young and up coming riders?...

Do it for the fun of doing it (may sound lame) but if you like doing something you will put more effort into it and learning won’t seem so difficult. All good riders started at the bottom.

After winning the Caribbean Freestyle Association’s BMX Street Online Video Competition, can we expect any other videos from Team More Halal?

We’ve been doing a lot of filming lately, so you can expect something very soon.

Any last words?

Oh yeah, want to say thanks to Billy at Brixton Cycles for the endless help and booking my train tickets, Toby and Aunty Sue for letting me eat all their food and sleep on their chair, Yolanda for being so nice to me, my buddy heart, Jamie D, Albes BMX for shipping my stuff here on time, my mum and the rest of my family, All the boys that I ride with or rode with, Sabrina for being Sabrina, God for giving me such a good talent, Team More Halal, Jimmy for being #1, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and all the staff that fixed me up when I broke ribs and Adrenaline Sun for letting me run my mouth off. It sure beats talking to myself .

Below is the winning video from Team More Halal and some other shots of Romell. Keep Logging onto Adrenaline Sun for more on other Caribbean BMX riders.

Nature Foundation St. Maarten and la Reserve Naturelle de Saint Martin were very pleased to receive a much needed donation from International Liquors and Tobacco this week, to put towards their conservation program. The funds are raised through the sale of a variety of Heineken bracelets initiated annually during the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. “During the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, we want to raise the exposure concerning the importance of keeping our island and it’s waters clean”, says ILTT/Heineken Commercial Manager John Leone, “We started with the green “Meet You There” bracelets which we donated in 2006 and followed up with ‘Serious “Clean” Fun’ bracelets in 2007, ‘St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’ bracelets in 2008, white “Enjoy Heineken Responsibly” bracelets in 2009, black “My Island, My Heineken’ bracelets in 2010. For the 2011 Heineken Regatta we sold a mix of all the previous years, which was great for everyone to complete the whole range of the past years’ bracelets. In 2012, we are offering a fun green My Island My Heineken band with 5 removable buttons, Over the years, we have raised over $17,000.00 through this program and we are very happy that we were able to generate over $5000.00 this past year to give to the Nature Foundation and La Reserve Naturelle combined. We hope we can continue to work together to find solutions that benefit both the island’s natural environment for all to enjoy.” “We are extremely grateful for this contribution,” says Marisa Brandy of the Nature Foundation. “The Foundation is funded purely through grants and fundraising efforts. A donation like this makes a significant difference to the work we do. The natural environment is one of St. Maarten’s most important resources – clean beaches, healthy seas and green hills are the reason why many of our visitors come here every year. It is everyone’s responsibility, from the individual to our Government and from small businesses to large international corporations, to protect our natural resources and conserve the beauty and biodiversity of our island for the benefit of current and future generations”. When asked what Nature Foundation would spend their money on, Ms. Brandy replies, “towards staff salaries as we are going through financial crises right now”. “Nature Foundation is proud to partner with corporations like Heineken and is incredibly thankful for having Heineken St. Maarten as a positive working partner,” she says. “We hope this continues into the future and that other companies on St. Maarten will follow Heineken’s example and help conserve St. Maarten’s environment”. The foundations and Heineken/ILTT would also like to especially thank the Shipwreck Shop and the St. Maarten Yacht Club for merchandising these items and individual volunteers for their efforts in selling these items during the St Maarten Heineken Regatta, and all year round.
After an outing in the historic category last year, Britain’s Steve Perez will return to the World Rally Car class in Sol Rally Barbados 2012 (June 9/10) in his ex- Ford Focus WRC07 with regular co-driver Paul Spooner on the notes; it will be the third different ex-works Focus he has driven in the island and is the seventh entry received for the event’s M8-WRC classification. His entry was posted on the event’s on the Sol Rally Barbados official web site, along with those of fellow historic rally enthusiasts Geoff Bell and Andrew Siddall, whom he introduced to the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport International event last year; their entries bring to 15 the number of overseas crews confirmed by the Barbados Rally Club (BRC), out of a total of 97 entries so far received. Sol RB12 Chairman Barry Gale said: “We were hoping to confirm Steve’s entry off the back of a successful outing on last Saturday’s opening round of the BTRDA Championship, the Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally, which he won on his last trip there in 2010 . . . but things did not go so well!” Extreme weather in the UK meant icy conditions for the Wyedean (February 11); of 180 starters, nearly one-third retired, and the surface was such a leveller of power and grip that a crew in a 1400cc Vauxhall Nova finished third overall. As Perez explains: “It was very icy but despite that, I really enjoyed it . . . after all, that’s what rally driving is all about. Like most, we ended up a bank in the first stage but were fastest by 17 seconds on SS2 and I loved it. The puncture on SS3 dropped us back but, when we got yet another puncture on SS4, it ended up breaking the wheel and the half-shaft and, although I tried to continue, it was game over. Not scoring this weekend isn’t ideal and we know we will miss the Dukeries, too.” There was some consolation for Perez, as the winning Focus WRC07 also carried Kick Energy Drink stickers; it was driven by Charlie Payne, who was seeded at three and co-driven by Craig Thorley, Group N winner with Ryan Champion in RB08. Roger Duckworth, who finished seventh in Sol RB11 in his Subaru Impreza WRC, retired with suspension damage, while Rob and Ross Weir, who will compete in Barbados for the first time this year, successfully continued the shakedown of their new Impreza B13 with a finish in difficult conditions. Perez will miss the Dukeries because it clashes with Sol RB12, which is his seventh visit to the island’s premier event. After an unsuccessful debut in 2004, when he retired early on day one following an accident in his ex-Hannu Mikkola Audi Quattro Sport, Perez did not return for two years. When he did, his fortunes improved, fourth in his ex-Focus WRC05, a result repeated in RB07, also highest-placed European crew.
Having established a pattern, despite bringing his older Focus WRC03 to Sol RB08, Perez claimed a hat-trick of fourth places; the following year, an early problem left him a long way off the leading pack, so he concentrated on entertainment for the rest of the weekend, throwing the Focus into every corner, much to the delight of the spectators.

Perez was absent in 2010, concentrating on the immensely popular BTRDA Championship in the UK, from which he emerged Champion, adding that title to his 2003 Armajaro British Historic Rally Championship (Porsche 911) and the 2004 ANCRO National Rally Championship (Focus WRC03).

There are few U.S. yachts as famous or celebrated as the 52-foot yawl Dorade, built at the Minneford Yacht Yard in City Island, New York, some 80 years ago. Designed by a young naval architect named Olin Stephens—the creator of multiple America’s Cup winners and the founder of the legendary Sparkman & Stephens design firm—she was an immediate success, the winner of the epic 1931 Transatlantic Race. When Olin and his brother, Rod, who both helped sail Dorade to victory, returned to New York, they were treated to a tickertape parade through the streets of Manhattan. Now, Dorade is once again ready to make history, but this time in a far different, much sunnier venue: the 32nd annual edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. With two weeks to go before the competition gets underway, the entry list now tops 160 yachts and continues to grow daily. But no other entrant will have the pedigree and tradition of Dorade, which earned the nickname “the mother of modern ocean racing” for her Transatlantic triumph. Dorade will use the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, and other Caribbean events this spring, as a tune-up for this summer’s Newport-Bermuda Race, which takes place in late June. “She was shipped to the islands last November to get more sailing under her bottom before the Bermuda Race,” said yacht designer Greg Stewart of the California naval architecture concern Nelson-Marek, who will be aboard Dorade for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta “It was 1934 the last time she was sailed to Bermuda!” Dorade was purchased by San Francisco sailor Matt Brooks, a member of the prestigious St. Francis Yacht Club, in the fall of 2010. Shortly after, she underwent an extensive refit at the LMI yard in Newport, R.I., including the addition of an engine (her previous owner had removed the power plant and other modern conveyances, returning the boat to the same layout and configuration as when she was originally launched eight decades ago). “The (initial) refit,” said Stewart, “expanded into a more major refit that continued over the spring of 2011.” Among the projects undertaken to prepare Dorade for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and offshore racing included structural repairs to the stem and stern post; new main and mizzen masts with all new bronze hardware; new mast and deck winches; a new rudder; a brand new electrical system; new navigation electronics, including radar and an Inmarsat satelitte communications system; and a new galley arrangement and stove. “That’s just a summary of the work that was done,” said Stewart. “The effort was huge. The level of fit and finish is spectacular.” Spectacular: The word describes not only this magnificent yacht, but also what’s in store for the 32nd St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, now just days away.

After dominating performances throughout the year, it was no surprise that Dane Mackie grabbed the shark’s portion of awards at the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Awards Ceremony on Friday, February 17th. The BJSC annual awards was for the BURKIE Junior surfing championship series which is 5 events sponsored by Lynch Insurance Brokers, Tile Gallery, Fortress Fund Managers and Jammin cruises. Appropriately taking place in the lush gardens of the Ocean Spray Hotel overlooking the beautiful Surfers point break, surf fans cheered as Mackie went up time and time again for top prizes in the 14 and Under boys, Under 16 boys and Under 18 boys divisions. In the Under 18 girls, Chelsea Roett edged out Chelsea Tuach for first place in a keenly contested battle. As two of the best junior female surfers in the region, they have started somewhat of a friendly rivalry which has become an annual treat for fans of both girls. The nights other winners included Jacob “Manrat” Burke in the 10 and Under boys division, Giselle Allan who won the 12 and Under girls and Che Allan grabbed top honors in the 12 and Under Boys. In the Special Awards Section Matheo Capasso collected prizes for both Most Effort and Sportsman of the Year and Adrenaline Sun won its first award in the Local Press Coverage Category. MC Alan Burke kept things running smoothly for the entire night and he made note of the fact that all eyes are on the Barbadian surfers right now. “Our top junior surfers are doing really well so right now the world is focusing on Barbados. There are a lot of major opportunities for everyone to make a living in the sport of surfing. From board shapers to photographers to team managers, but we must work together to make it happen.” Adrenaline Sun thanks the Barbados Junior Surfing Club for the award and we will strive to bring even more coverage to the sport of surfing in 2012.
