The current entry list stands at 108 – in recent weeks, 13 of the original 121 entries made on-line have been withdrawn – which total includes 72 local competitors, a record for the event . . . and more than twice as many cars as started the BRC’s inaugural International All-Stage Rally back in 1990; a number remain on a stand-by list, and will be incorporated into the final start list in accordance with the provisions of the ASRs, as the BRC works towards its maximum start cap of 100 cars.

As many on-line entries were posted as long ago as last October, only a few competitors had completed vital sponsorship negotiations when making their initial entries; apart from either change or confirmation of co-driver, it is under the ‘sponsors’ heading where most changes have been made this week.

A survey of the completed forms reveals that more than 160 local companies or brand names have been listed as sponsors by those 72 local competitors, with support coming from all sides of commerce and industry; while there are many predictable automotive brand names on the list, including fuels, lubricants, tyres, there is also sponsorship from sectors ranging from food and beverage companies and restaurants through the telecommunications industry to financial services and insurance.

Sol Rally Barbados and Shell V-Power King of the Hill are organised and promoted by the Barbados Rally Club, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007; Sol RB12 is the 23rd running of the Club’s annual International All-Stage Rally and marks the fifth year of title sponsorship by the Sol Group, the Caribbean’s largest independent oil company.

Although new to Sol Rally Barbados itself, Hartling made his first competition appearance in the island in the Valvoline Shakedown Stages just two weeks ago; co-driven in his striking Lotus Exige by fellow-Canadian Andy Proudfoot, he ran in SuperModified 11. Despite encountering gear selection problems in the early part of the event – he lost fourth, fifth and six – he was fourth in class after three stages, but then found a gearbox oil bung missing at service, so retired to prevent further damage.

While his previous experience includes conventional events such as Targa Newfoundland, where he has been a regular finisher – eighth overall and class second in 2009 in his BMW M3 among his best results – he has also enjoyed the more odd-ball side of motor sport, including the 24 Hours of LeMons series of races in North America.

These endurance events – cars usually race for 14-and-a-half hours over a weekend – are run for cars costing less than US $500 to buy and build; while the usual regulations dealing with important issues such as safety follow main-line motor sport, the approach to cars and competition is rather more light-hearted. Hartling says: “We built a real special, a police pursuit car cut down, caged and then we put on a Ford F150 truck body . . . backwards! It drives the guys on the track nuts!”

In comparison with Hartling, Dhanraj is a veteran of rallying the island, with three overall finishes in Sol Rally Barbados in the last four years, and occasional outings in other island events. He was first seen in Sol RB08, when he finished 35th overall, sixth in M8-A in a Subaru Impreza Sti, proudly flying his national flag from the roof.

He then switched to two-wheel-drive, with the ex-David Williams Toyota Starlet, with progressively better results of 10th, sixth and then fourth last year in SuperModified 9. He remains in the class this year, driving the ex-James Betts Opel Corsa. Back home, he is in the process of having his own new Toyota Starlet built for local events.

His co-driver this year is the experienced American Scott Leonard, who currently lives in Trinidad. He has an impressive record as both driver – winner of the Idaho Rally in 2008 – and co-driver in a wide variety of North America events.

This year, there will be 36 boats competing in 4 classes; Racing A, Cruising A, Cruising B, and J24 with the hottest being J24 with 16 boats vying for the win.

The overseas contingent is strong with representatives coming from Grenada, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Great Britian, the USA and the British Virgin Islands to participate.

One of the new initiatives which will be launched this year is the Sailors for the Sea Programme which signifies this as the first official year that the Mount Gay Barbados Regatta is “going green”. According to the Director of the Barbados Sailing Association, Renata Goodridge, this environmentally friendly programme was started to show everyone that it’s important to recycle and be respectful to the environment.

“We’re making a conservative effort to keep the beaches and the waters in Carlisle Bay clean,” says Goodridge, “Anything which comes from the boats or the Regatta Village that can be recycled, will be recycled and this include all plastics, glass, cans and any other metals.”

Regatta fans can check out the sailing action which starts today at 10:00 a.m. in Carlisle Bay with the Day Prize Presentation at 5:30 p.m. at the Barbados Yacht Club.

The Nissan Pulsar GTi-R series was originally manufactured by Nissan in order to enter the World Rally Championship under Group A rules. There were two distinct models in the series: GTi-RA (the road edition) and the GTi-RB (the motorsports edition). The body is based on the Nissan Sunny hatchback but it distinguishes itself with a large rear wing and bonnet scoup.

The Owner

Today, we’re in the driver’s seat with project car owner MegaShotta. Now MegaShotta is a true Nissan man, whose previous project cars included a Sentra B13 and a  March K10. When he got his hands on this ’93 Pulsar GTi-RA in 2010, it came with a bit of work to be done which included replacing the knocked engine and MegaShotta didn’t waste a second.

Future Plans

MegaShotta’s Pulsar GTi-R has recently received a paint job, but unfortunately the paint was contaminated and began to flake after just a few weeks therefore another trip to the painter is foreseen. He also plans to get a retune to add more power.

The Womens Pro saw a rekindling of the Battle of the Chelseas as rivals Chelsea Roett vs Chelsea Tuach, both surfed solid, with Roett taking the title from 2 time winner Tuach. Roett came to the event directly after 2 weeks at Jim Hogan Surf Camps in Cost Rica. Tuach also finished 4th in the U-21 Junior Pro.

In the $10 000US Mens Pro Division, the 15 year old St.Winifred’s school student Josh Burke showed tremendous surfing ability displaying his innovative style to place 5th, he also won the best wave award in the “Expression Session”.

Bruce Mackie surfed extremely well throughout the event with a couple nail biting heat performances to place 9th in the Mens Pro and went on to win the U-21 Pro Junior to take home the $600US cheque.

The youngest Bajan at the event, 13 yr old Che Allan once again proved that he is a surfer not to be taken lightly, performing way beyond his years finishing 2nd in the U-21 Pro Junior and taking the $400US cheque, a pretty good pay day for a kid. He also won the U-16 Beacon exhibition Junior Final taking home a huge trophy.

Although Danny Edghill got a second round defeat in the Mens Pro and then a disappointing 5th place in the U-21 Junior pro, he surfed with his usual speed, power and threw some massive airs to the delight of the spectators, unfortunately came up short on wave selection.

13-year old Che Allan once again performs well beyond his years

Trinidadian born/Barbados resident, Josh Galt got a taste of his home turf surf for the first time, split on which country he was representing as his surfing abilities are born and raised in Barbados. Only surfing for a short two and a half years he performed really well to earn a 7th place in the U-21 Junior Pro.

Francisco Belorin from Venezuela won the Mens Pro taking home $3500us just edging out Jessie Heilman from Florida.

Paddle for Tomorrow is The Tomorrow Project’s upcoming charity event. It takes place on Sunday 27th May and will take the form of a sponsored paddle from Dover Beach to Blakey’s on the Hastings Boardwalk. Each paddler will seek to raise $200 in sponsorship and they are hoping to get at least 100 participants. Paddle for Tomorrow is for all ages, however, children under 12 must be accompanied by a “mature” paddler. The Paddle will start at 9am from Dover Beach (meet by the car park) and finish at Blakey’s on the Boardwalk where there will be lots of giveaways and refreshments on sale.

The event will raise funds for the Because of Jenna Trust and The Nature Fun Ranch – a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing about positive change in our youth by providing a safe, friendly environment that encourages positive and healthy lifestyles, learning skills including animal husbandry and organic farming.

So hop on your surf boards, jump in a Kayak, Stand Up Paddle, grab a Boggie Board, or swim if you like!!! (Anything non-motorised). Let’s all come together and help to “create a better tomorrow” for these very special kids and their families.
