Great Racing at Grenada Sailing Festival 2012

Posted on 02 February 2012   Sailing

Four days of great competitive racing have already taken place in the 2012 Grenada Sailing Festival Camper & Nicholsons Racing Series. Different courses set from Port Louis Marina, off Grand Anse, Point Salines and the South Eastern coast have been raced each day, making up the Mount Gay Race Series; SOL EC Ocean Race; True Blue Bay Resort Pursuit Race and Budget Marine Race Series. The event closed on Tuesday with the Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Race Series with assorted courses off Grand Anse Beach. Conditions have been excellent for exciting and challenging sailing, with good winds and clear bright skies.

Great Racing at Grenada Sailing Festival 2012 sailingOnce again this year, the fleet of competing yachts was made up of a varied international mix from many different countries including the UK, USA, Canada, Austria, Italy, France and Ireland, joined by regular Festival visitors from Trinidad, Antigua and Barbados, and a strong contingent of local Grenadian competitors. Racing has been a fascinating mix of speed and tactics and places have been hotly contested right to the finish line. Grenadian yachts Die Hard, Bloody Mary, Apero and Shamballa have been performing extremely well, with Robbie Yearwood and Die Hard taking a succession of firsts.

On each race day the yachts raced in five different classes, according to their design, sails and speed: Racing Class, Cruising Class 1, Cruising Class 2, Charter Class and Multihull Class. Prizes were presented to the first three yachts in each class. Check out the results of the first 3 days below!

Great Racing at Grenada Sailing Festival 2012 sailingThe sailing action will continue with the local work boats heading for Grand Anse Beach on the week-end 4 & 5 February, when the traditional Grenada Sailing Festival Scotiabank Work Boat Regatta will become a central part of the island’s National Independence Celebrations. There will be all-action competition on the water between the sailing communities of Carriacou, Gouyave, Grand Mal, Petite Martinique, Sauteurs and Woburn, plus great entertainment, games and activities for everyone, arts and crafts on sale, and food stalls in a Community Kitchen, where all the best traditional dishes will be on offer. There will also be a Junior Dinghy Racing Championship staged on Saturday 4 January, when Grenada’s talented young sailors will be able to show their skills to the crowd on Grand Anse Beach in an event organised by the Grenada Sailing Festival and Grenada Yacht Club, sponsored by Budget Marine & GUT Co-Op Credit Union Regatta.
