Josh Burke heads to Billabong Hawaiian Surf Camp
Young Barbadian surfer, Josh Burke heads to the North Shore of the Hawaiian Island, Oahu for 10 days of training under the guidance of Big wave Hawaiian legend and world Class coach Rainos Hayes of whom coached 2000 ISA World Junior Champ, Joel Centenio, the Hawaiian Junior team to Gold in the 2005 ISA World Surfing Games and the Hawaiian Tag team to be the Aloha Cup champions in 2007.
“Josh is one of six elite Billabong Junior Riders selected from of an international roster to participate in this year’s Billabong “Bloodlines” training/development camp on the North Shore of Oahu in February.
From this program, Josh will be exposed to some of the worlds greatest surf locations. Billabong Junior Riders also aims to create increased surf skill and technique development, expand surf break knowledge, analysis, equipment requirements and heightened awareness and build team cohesion, bonding and unity among all participants.
According to Josh’s surf coach, Alan Burke is excited about the opportunity. “Joshua has had his fair share of big wave experiences for his age and a few solid sessions at 8 ft Soupbowl recently will certainly help with his preparation,” said the older Burke. ”While Barbados provides for big wave experiences, the seven mile stretch of the North shore of Oahu, known as the “miracle mile” to surfers is the pinnacle and true proving ground of what a surfer is made of! Billabong has an amazing junior program, we are truly grateful to this company for this opportunity.”
Also looking forward to seeing how the young shredder handles the powerful surf of Hawaii! is Surf Marketing Manager for Billabong USA, Blake Pettit. ” This is the proving grounds of the surfing world and stated and I’m excited to see Josh’s raw talent exposed in the quality surf of the North Shore, both of which should compliment one another other quite well.”
But, the 14 year old, Billabong, X-Trak, Nixon, Vonzipper, Reef, Futures and Burkie Board sponsored surfer will not be alone as his younger brother Jacob has been welcomed to Hawaii as well. Apparently being signed to big sponsors runs in the family because the younger Burke was just picked up by the Billabong Brand as well and is showing good technique and is progressing at a rapid rate and will soon be on the heels of his older brother! Billabong Junior Riders Camp runs from February 5th-11th.
