Mackie & Roett shine in Premier Divisions
The swell forecast could not have been much better for the second event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club Burkie Junior Surf Series. The day opened with a salvo of head high sets that would cause the event organizers to switch earlier plans to run the younger groms first. As such the Under 16 and Under 18 surfers had first dibs on the juicy spoils of the swell, and did not disappoint, blasting the lined up peaks with fans of spray and huge air rotations to the delight of the crowd on hand.
In the premier Under 18 Open, Dane Mackie (Lost Enterprises, Arnette, Digicel), would back up his season opening victory with another first place finish to solidify his lead and stranglehold on the division title heading into the final series event. Mackie would post a 11.30 average two wave total over Chelsea Roett who averaged 10.10 to finish second and open the battle of the runners up heading into the third and final event. Dane attacked his favorite home break with flare connecting the long lefts with a series of blow tails into aggressive front side fins free reverses, Chelsea would connect with a series of vertical backhand snaps. Also in the hunt for valuable series points were Josh Burke (Billabong, X-Trak, Reef, Lime, Von Zipper, Nixon, Future Fins, Burkie Boards) who would blow the tail on his back hand and volley into a few front side airs but still fall short of the score needed finishing third with 8.14 just ahead of young Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards) who placed fourth with 7.88 who would notch a few above the lip turns of his own to keep up with the older groms.
The Under 18 Girls would see the top female rider Chelsea Roett (Oakley, Lime) extend her domination for the top spot overall with another win in the division. Roett would command the entire heat over her younger counterparts with her vertical approach and aggressive snaps. Rising young star Jodie Burke seeking her share of her brother’s spotlight would stamp her claim in both her finals on the day with a second place in the U18 Girls followed by newcomer to the surf competition arena Olivia Warden who would take third and make a solid start. Also vying for the future girls crown were Gabriella Gittens who showing immense promise at 10 years old and developing rapidly and Morgan Rice who maybe in her last Series appearance would make two finals appearances with a fifth in the older division.
In the youngest division the 10 & Under groms, Zander Venezia (Hurley, Dragon) would take a first place finish on the day controlling the final with fluid snaps and cutbacks. With his second victory in the series Zander now controls his destiny heading into the series finale. Making his series debut for the year was Axe Garrett who would execute some great turns to the inside and notch a second place result, followed by Charlie Jenkins in third and Caleb Rapson in fourth. The divisions youngest charger 7 year old Matteo Capasso pleased the crowd with some grab rail free falls finishing 5th alongside Darrian Pitcher rounding out the Club’s future stars of Barbados.
Che Allan (Quiksilver, Dragon) would edge Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards) for another victory in the 12 & Under. The goofyfooter Allan would connect the lefts with his flashy fins free turns to sweeping carves and Rose finishing second would favor the short rights on his front hand launching blow tails and taking to the air. Jacob Burke (RVCA, Dakine, Indo Board, Burkie Boards) would display great form with his carves and critical hits to take third over Zander Venezia (Hurley, Dragon) who was fourth and Jaedon Brancker who made his debut finals appearance and promises to shine in a few more.
The Under 16 final would be another high performance display between six of Barbados’ finest groms to the excitement of all standing on South Point’s rocky outcrop. In what would be one of the highest scoring heats of the day with all posting great rides and progressive turns Dane Mackie would shine again to lock a narrow victory over rival and friend Josh Burke. The rising young stars Che Allan and Andrew Rose would finish third and fourth raking in valuable series points, and rounding the field were Josh Galt and Evan Moll in fifth and sixth place.
The 12 & Under Girls would see the return of Jodie Burke in fine form and delivering victory for a commanding series lead. Morgan Rice would execute a few long rides of her own and take home silver on the day. Newcomer Olivia Warden would finish in third for her second bronze medal of the day. The youngest girl groms would post great scores of their own in what a close final between them, merely 0.7 average wave score between 4th and 6th. However it was Roma Bellori in 4th, Gabriella Gittens in 5th and Giselle Allan finishing in 6th on the day.
