Mount Gay Regatta 2011 – Race Day 3
Barbados’ premier sailing event, the 2011 Mount Gay Rum Regatta came to a fitting conclusion on Sunday with crew members bidding fond farewells at the overall prize giving.
With smiles everywhere, the event could be compared to an intimate family setting where everyone could literally eat, drink and be merry. There were several overseas racers which participated in the event. Skipper of the Trinidadian vessel “Legacy”, Reginald Williams said that he felt really happy about this year’s Mount Gay Regatta. Although, Williams captained Legacy to win the overall Cruising Class A, he maintained a very modest attitude, “Whenever we sail, we sail for the Caribbean, it’s not just about me, its about my crew and all the Caribbean people.”
Another vessel which sailed in was the Van Dan Vwell 1 from Martinique, which was skippered by Mount Gay Regatta veteran Jean Trudo. After 50 years of coming to Barbados, Trudo still gets excited whenever he sails here. “I always enjoy the welcome whenever I come, it’s like family.” Van Dan Vwell 1 represented well in Racing Class A by capturing 3rd place with it’s sister ship Van Dan Vwell 2 winning 1st place in the category.
